Success in Leadership: Knowing When to Change

In today’s business environment, one reality is becoming increasingly clear. There is no such thing as a “perfect” management style.
What worked yesterday may not work today. What works for one team may fail with another. And what drives performance in stable times may create resistance during periods of change. Yet many leaders continue to rely on a single, fixed way of managing often the one that helped them build the business in the first place. This is where challenges begin.
In our work particularly with SMEs and family businesses, we observe this pattern frequently. Founders and owner-managers who have successfully grown their businesses through strong, centralized decision-making often find themselves at a crossroads. As organizations grow and teams evolve, employees expect greater clarity, autonomy, and involvement in decision-making. The leadership approach that once created speed and control can start to create bottlenecks and disengagement.
The issue is not that one leadership style is right and another is wrong. The real challenge lies in the ability, or inability, to adapt. Effective leadership today is not about choosing the right style, but about adjusting your approach based on the situation, the team, and the business context. Leadership has become inherently situational.
This means that in times of uncertainty, teams need clarity and direction. During growth phases, leaders must empower others and delegate. When performance declines, a more hands-on and structured approach may be required. And when building a strong culture, leaders need to listen, involve, and align their teams around shared values and goals.
At the core of this adaptability are three critical capabilities which are self-awareness, context awareness, and team awareness. Leaders who successfully navigate change are not necessarily the most experienced or the most charismatic. They are the ones who can flex their style. They know when to step in, when to step back, and when to change their approach altogether.
At Stoika Consulting, we support founders and leadership teams in building adaptive leadership capabilities, establishing clear management systems, and creating organizations that can scale beyond the founder.
If your organization is going through change and this perspective resonates with you, feel free to reach out to us. We would be happy to explore how we can support your journey.
